During the brief moratorium on horror films in the late 1930s, Bela Lugosi turned to poverty-row mysteries and serials. In S.O.S. Coast Guard -- a prime example of Republic Studios' 12-chapter serials of the era -- Lugosi plays a mad scientist who's invented a disintegration ray. Now, the usual evil foreign powers are after the weapon. Ralph Byrd (who later became famous as the first screen Dick Tracy) plays the stalwart Coast Guard hero.
